A year ago today, supporters of President Barack Obama celebrated in restaurants on the Central Coast and along the chilly streets of Washington, D.C. And for many African-Americans, the inauguration of the country’s first black president had special meaning.

Supporters of all races gathered together, some cried and many believed things would change, sharing what felt like a national moment.

Some detractors didn’t watch the event, and in the year since, polls show they are gaining steam.

Obama starts his second year with one of the lowest approval ratings of any president in the past 50 years, according to a Gallup Poll. Still, half of all Americans approved of his job performance as of Jan. 1.

“I think it is unfortunate that a lot of Americans don’t want to give him the time he needs,” Salinas Valley Democratic Club President Teri Short said about the naysayers.

Short was at Hullabaloo restaurant in Oldtown Salinas a year ago today, celebrating Obama’s inauguration.

“We were full of such hope, joy and pride,” she said.

That party was organized by then-club president, Ed Weinstein, who takes a slightly different lesson from the past year.

“Sure, people did have their hopes too high” as to what Obama could accomplish, Weinstein said. “But, gee, I was really hoping for just a little bit more.”

He tempers his disappointment: “I’m not depressed, because it’s not over yet.”

Vinz Koller, chairman of the Democratic Party in Monterey County, was in D.C. with his wife, celebrating the moment there.

He understands that some people are disappointed with the pace of change but points to what he considers Obama’s successes — leadership through the worst economic crisis in a generation and pushing changes to health care further than any other has.

“We are going to toast to him,” he said of his plans for the anniversary. “We want him to succeed. That’s true for everyone. It is all of our futures at stake.”

Monterey Attorney and Tea Party activist Robin Kubicek wants Obama to succeed, just not on the path she believes he is on. She didn’t vote for him and couldn’t bring herself to watch the inauguration last year but was hopeful about the president’s promise for increased transparency.
