Tilikum known as dangerous whale at SeaWorld Orlando

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

SeaWorld Orlando has always known that Tilikum, a 12,000-pound orca that killed trainer Dawn Brancheau on Wednesday, could be a particularly dangerous killer whale.

SeaWorld trainers were forbidden from swimming with Tilikum, as they often did with the resort’s seven other orcas.

Only about a dozen of 28 handlers, including Brancheau, had been specifically trained to work with him from the edge of SeaWorld’s pools.

That was in part because of his size: At an average weight of nearly 6 tons, Tilikum — nicknamed Tilly — was the largest orca at any of SeaWorld’s parks.

But it was also because of his ominous history.

In 1991, Tilikum and two female killer whales dragged trainer Keltie Byrne underwater, drowning her in front of spectators at Sealand of the Pacific, a defunct aquarium in Victoria, British Columbia.

Acquired by SeaWorld the next year to breed with female orcas, he was involved in a second incident in July 1999 when the naked body of a man who had apparently sneaked into SeaWorld after hours to swim with the whales was found draped dead across his back.

Authorities later concluded that the man, Daniel Dukes, likely suffered hypothermia in the 55-degree water and drowned, but they said it also appeared Tilikum bit the man’s body and tore off his swimming trunks after he had died.

Still, Chuck Tompkins, the corporate curator in charge of animal behavior for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, said Tilikum was not an unusually violent orca.

“What you need to remember is, we’ve done thousands of interactions with this animal with no incidents whatsoever,” Tompkins told the Orlando Sentinel. He also noted that Tilikum had fathered many calves at SeaWorld, calling him “a valuable asset not only from a breeding standpoint but from a behavior standpoint, too.”

Pentagon OKs lifting ban on women in submarines

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates sent a letter to lawmakers notifying them of the decision by the Navy, which could see the first women on nuclear submarines next year.

“This is fundamentally a Navy initiative, which they recently briefed to the secretary of defense. (Gates) supports it and he notified Congress of the Navy’s plans,” Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said.

Women account for about 15 percent of the more than 336,000 members of the U.S. Navy and can serve on its surface ships. But critics have argued that submarines are different, pointing to cramped quarters where some crews share beds in shifts — a practice known as “hot bunking.”

A likely scenario would see female officers becoming the first to join crews on the Navy’s fleet of 71 submarines, since officers have separate accommodations, a U.S. defense official said.

Congress has 30 days to provide its official comment on the Navy’s decision.

Nancy Duff Campbell, an advocate for expanding the role of women in the U.S. armed forces, applauded the decision and said she did not expect any opposition from lawmakers.

“This is something that has a lot of support (within the military) and the Navy has a serious plan” to carefully integrate submarine personnel, she said.

Allowing women on submarines would be another step forward in expanding the role of women in the U.S. military. In 2008, a woman was promoted to the rank of four-star general for the first time.

Testifying in the Senate on Tuesday, Army General George Casey said he thought it was time to re-examine the policy that places restrictions on women in combat roles.

“We don’t have an active effort going on, but I think it’s time,” Casey said.

Women are still barred from traditional frontline combat roles in the U.S. armed forces. But female soldiers often run the same risks as men in Iraq and Afghanistan, where bombings and other insurgent attacks can happen almost anywhere.

Supra Shoes Taking Over the Sneaker Game One Shoe at a Time

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Supra skytop shoes started off as a small skateboarding shoe company in 2007. It was/is a sub company of krew apparel. Moving from Alaska to Arizona, it finally gained initial fame in Los Angeles, California. From there it just began to explode.

Originally a skate line, it has gained major fame in the urban fashion market. This had a lot to do with major rappers beginning to wear them. As with most fashion lines celebrities taking its favor helps the company dramatically. The right celebrity can bring a failed company back to life or a successful apparel line to mega fame status.

That’s exactly what has happened with supra vaider shoes. Just a few weeks ago Lindsay Lohan was spotted wearing her black laceless supra sneakers. Before that Lil Wayne did a concert in his custom silver Skytops. Slash, the major Rock band, rocked their Supra Tufs out on stage. Even Rihanna and Jay-Z made appearances with their favorite supra kicks. This has helped supra tk tremendously.

The shoe company is so big now, shoes are nowhere near all they sell. They make really legit jackets. They have an apparel line. They even sell necklaces and keychains. In fact the keychains sell like mad. Everyone has a Supra Cap. Who doesn’t like rockin’ a hat? And Supra also of course sells t-shirts and many other accessories.

There shoe line has expanded exponentially. They do callabs with practically everyone and have countless limited shoes, with everyone from rappers to hotels. The Supra Suprano High kill it, but they also have Supranos, supra vaider shoes, Tuffs, Cubans and much more.

If you have a chances to take a look at this line, make sure you do. They’re the hottest new shoe company I’ve seen in a while.

Bill ending banks’ role in student loans stalls in Senate

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Four months after it sailed through the Democratic-led House, legislation to overhaul federal student lending and channel about $80 billion in savings toward an array of education initiatives has stalled in the Senate.

In his State of the Union address Wednesday, President Obama exhorted the Senate to pass the bill, which he said would revitalize community colleges and make college more affordable. But the bill faces unified opposition from the Republican minority and sharp questions from at least some Democrats, according to congressional aides from both parties, and the Democratic majority has put it on hold during the drawn-out health-care deliberations.

The assumption on Capitol Hill is that Democrats will attempt to move the student loan bill through a special procedure that requires a simple majority rather than the usual 60 votes out of 100 needed to stop a filibuster. That tactic is also under discussion for health-care reform, said the aides, who asked for anonymity to speak candidly. So the two issues have become intertwined.

Timing is significant. because the student loan legislation would require all colleges to use direct government lending as of July 1 for federal loans. Currently, they can choose between direct lending and a federal program that guarantees student loans made by private banks. The bill would not affect nonfederal loans.

By cutting banks out of the equation, the administration expects to reap $80 billion over the next decade for increased student aid, community colleges, early childhood education and other programs. Those funding estimates, however, are being questioned because they are several months old.

Prominent players in the lending industry, including Sallie Mae, oppose the legislation, saying that it will eliminate thousands of jobs and that there are ways to save the government money without shutting out private lenders. Republicans depict themselves as defenders of market competition.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, has not introduced his version of the House bill, passed in mid-September on a vote of 253 to 171. He said he plans to move a bill “early this year.”

In the meantime, Republicans are on the attack. “Relying on budgetary gimmicks to stage another Washington takeover, this time of 15 million student loans, is not good for college students,” said Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), a former education secretary. “The Department of Education in Washington will not be able to serve students as well as 3,000 lending institutions.”

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) and a few other Democrats also have raised questions about the bill, although it appears that most in the party support it.

Bob Shireman, deputy undersecretary of education, said colleges are preparing to switch to direct lending. “I’m confident that we’ll see movement on this bill.”

The University of Maryland is preparing to switch to direct lending if needed, said Sarah Bauder, the school’s financial aid director, but she added that she prefers the public-private guaranteed lending program. “My concern is that no one’s made a decision yet” in Congress, Bauder said. “It’s holding the students hostage.”

‘Chemical Ali’ executed in Iraq

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Majid, an enforcer in Saddam Hussein’s regime and his cousin, had earlier been sentenced to death four times for genocide and crimes against humanity.

In January, he was sentenced to death for ordering the gas attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988.

It is believed that about 5,000 people died in the attack.

Iraqi jets swooped over Halabja and for five hours sprayed it with a lethal cocktail of mustard gas and the nerve agents Tabun, Sarin and VX.

Majid was a cousin of Saddam Hussein, and earned his nickname after his use of poison gas.

News of the hanging came shortly after three suicide car bombs struck in central Baghdad. It was not immediately clear whether the attacks were linked the execution of Majid.

Majid was sentenced to hang in June 2007 for his role in a military campaign against ethnic Kurds, codenamed Anfal, that lasted from February to August of 1988.

In December 2008 he also received a death sentence for his role in crushing a Shia revolt after the 1991 Gulf War.

In March 2009 he was sentenced to death, along with others, for the 1999 killings of Shia Muslims in the Sadr City district of Baghdad.

The Iraqi High Tribunal was set up to try former members of Saddam Hussein’s mainly Sunni government and was the same one that sentenced the former president to death.

Financial News: New Glass-Steagall Will Shake Private Equity

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Following President Obama’s shock announcement yesterday of plans to strip banks of their private equity interests, Financial News looks at the U.S. and European banks’ exposure to the asset class.

The White House issued a statement yesterday, in which it said: “No bank or financial institution that contains a bank will own, invest in or sponsor a hedge fund or a private equity fund.”

The rule in its present wording could potentially force banks to dispose of both their direct private equity arms and also their substantial fund investments in the asset class.

Should European politicians decide to follow the U.S.’s lead, as some expect, there could be a big impact on the powerful investment houses in the banks based in the region.

Tim Syder, deputy managing partner of U.K. mid-market buyout firm Electra, said a similar move in Europe would have a greater affect at the top end of the private equity market. He said: “There is going to be less private equity competition in the market as capital will be more expensive. Where it is going to have an effect is that banks are not going to be investors in funds. Funds will be harder to raise but I think that would have happened anyway.”

The move is likely to further precipitate a decline in banks’ holdings in private equity, which made up about 50% of the asset class in the 1980s, according to industry insiders. Bank investments in private equity now make up 9% of fund investments, according to data provider Preqin.

Bruce Ettelson, a partner at law firm Kirkland & Ellis, said: “In a world where there is less capital available for private equity and hedge funds, this will take out another source of funding.

“Banks unloading their stakes into the secondary market could cause a decline in prices and have an adverse affect on the very institutions that government is trying to buttress.”

The following data has largely been taken from the banks’ websites, the banks themselves and Preqin, where stated.

   In Europe
Credit Suisse (CS) has more than $33 billion of private equity managed assets, which are held in operations such as its fund of funds division and a direct arm, DLJ Merchant Banking.

Lloyds Banking Group (LYG) owns Lloyds Development Capital, which manages GBP2 billion of investments, and Bank of Scotland Integrated Finance, which is running an ongoing sale process handled by UBS (UBS). It has deployed more than GBP10 billion since 2000.

Barclays Private Equity is also considering a spin out. Its latest buyout fund raised EUR2.4 billion.

HSBC Private Equity has a large Asian business, HSBC Private Equity Asia, with $3.5 billion under management and a North American business with more than $1 billion, as well as a U.K. division with undisclosed assets.

BNP Paribas (BNP.FR) is the largest investor in the funds of PAI Partners, France’s largest buyout firm.

   In the U.S.
The direct arms of the U.S. banks are large. Goldman Sachs (GS), across its eight private equity units, has $27.2 billion (EUR19.2 billion) of dry powder ready to deploy in private equity deals, the most of any firm globally. U.S. firm Blackstone Group holds the second-highest amount of un-deployed capital with $25.2 billion.

Citigroup (C) owns highly-regarded direct division Metalmark, which has invested $7.6 billion since 1986, and also through alternative asset arm Citi Alternative Investments, which has long been a large player in private equity.

JP Morgan’s (JPM) direct investment arm, One Equity Partners, manages $8 billion of investments and commitments. The bank also has $6.8 billion invested in other private equity funds, according to Preqin.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s (BAC) private equity arm BAML Capital Partners has more than $8 billion under management. It has $5.1 billion of fund investments, Preqin said.

Morgan Stanley’s (MS) private equity arm has invested $6 billion since 1985.

Fresh row over UN move in Sri Lanka

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Seventeen days ahead of the January 26 Presidential election, a fresh row has broken out between Sri Lanka and the United Nations (UN) after it was made known that the UN Secretary-General Ban ki-moon has conveyed to Colombo that he is considering appointing a Commission of Experts to advise him further and to assist the Sri Lankan Government in taking measures to address possible violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in the last days of Eelam War IV (July 2006 to May 2009).

A report posted on the UN news centre web site said that UN spokesman Martin Nesirky made the remarks in response to questions from media on the statement made in New York by Philip Alston on Thursday. The Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions told a news conference that there are strong indications that the video of alleged extrajudicial executions by Sri Lankan soldiers that aired last August on British television is authentic and called for an inquiry into possible war crimes committed during the war between the Sri Lankan forces and the LTTE.

Responding sharply to the reports, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is seeking a second term two years ahead of his tenure, told a group of officials at a meeting in Matara district that the UN has to inform the Sri Lankan Government before issuing statements since Sri Lanka is also a member of the world body and is an independent country.

The developments could impact the outcome of the forthcoming Presidential polls, in which the contest is mainly between Mr. Rajapaksa and the common Opposition Sri Lanka Presidential candidate, retired General Sarath Fonseka, as charges of `war crimes’ has been the recurring theme within and outside the island nation since the military defeat of the LTTE in May 2009.

In a controversial interview to English weekly Sunday Leader on December 13 the commander turned politician had said brother of President and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had instructed a ground commander in the battle zone during the last phase of the Eelam War IV to shoot all LTTE leaders who came out to surrender to the military. But the next day, the General went back on his comments.

Gen. (retd.) Fonseka who got the backing of the post-Prabakaran Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in support of his candidature earlier this week on Friday got endorsement from unexpected quarters with the announcement by Batticaloa Mayor Sivageetha Prabakaran that she would vote and work for his victory. Ms. Prabakaran was a member of the break-away LTTE, Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) and a camp follower of the group founder Karuna.

`Col’ Karuna is currently a Minister in the Rajapaksa Government and is one of the Senior Vice-Presidents of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). The Batticoloa Mayor too joined the SLFP in the footsteps of `Col’ Karuna. He was not available for comment on the latest developments.

The fast paced developments in the run up to the Presidential poll has undoubtedly made it a tough fight for the incumbent President since both the chief contenders for the top office not only represent the majority Sinhalese community but are also credited for the successful military campaign against the Tamil Tigers. In the evolving scenario Tamil and Muslim voters could play a crucial role in the outcome of the election.

At the UN headquarters the world body spokesperson Martin Nesirky told reporters that the establishment of a commission of experts to advice Mr. Banki-Moon on Sri Lanka is currently receiving detailed consideration by the UN Secretariat.

Responding to questions on comments made on Thursday by the Special Rapporteur dealing with Sri Lanka, Philip Alston, and the Spokesperson said that the Technical Note presented by the Special Rapporteur highlights the need for a credible, independent and impartial investigation of the allegations of violations of human rights and international law by all sides in the conflict in Sri Lanka.

Separately at his news conference Mr. Alston maintained that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has repeatedly called for a full, broad, and impartial investigation into allegations of violations of human rights and international law by all sides that occurred during the civil war in Sri Lanka. “A full and impartial investigation into allegations of human rights violations is critical if we are to confront impunity and bring perpetrators of such violations to justice. The United Nations stands ready to assist the Government in this respect”.

In his response Mr. Rajapaksa noted that no UN official has the right to express their own views since Sri Lanka is an independent country. Official web site quoted him as saying, “We have confidence that our brave security personnel haven’t been involved in any misconduct… Our Forces are among the best disciplined Forces in the world… As a result of Fonseka’s statement our security officers are in danger. They could be taken into custody while they are abroad”.

At another news conference here Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama charged that the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions has flouted diplomatic norms by making public the findings of a 3 member panel probing the controversial Channel 4 video even before Sri Lanka could respond to the revelations.

“My Ministry has communicated in this regard both to the Special Rapporteur as well as to the UN Secretariat in New York that the Public Statement in New York is a violation of all the accepted procedures of the United Nations and the norms of justice and fair play”, Minister Bogollagama told media.

The Foreign Minister charged that the Special Rapporteur had ignored the very findings of his experts in an attempt to influence the elections in Sri Lanka. “Therefore Prof. Alston’s rush and determination to go public, ignoring procedure and the very opinions of the ‘experts’ must make us question whether he is targeting our country and deliberately timing his actions to coincide with the current sensitive phase of national elections,” the Minister said.
